This artwork is a focused light study, exploring how lighting influences mood, shadows, and reflections on polished surfaces. Using a set of chess pieces as the subject, the goal was to observe and manipulate the interplay of highlights and shadows under different lighting conditions.
The first composition uses brighter, more evenly distributed lighting to bring out the reflective qualities of the chess pieces, emphasizing their smooth textures and elegant forms. In contrast, the second composition uses dim, directional lighting to create a dramatic atmosphere, casting deeper shadows and emphasizing the contrast between light and dark.
This study allowed for a deeper understanding of how light behaves on glossy surfaces and how subtle adjustments in lighting can completely transform the feel of a scene. It demonstrates the importance of lighting in storytelling, even in simple setups, as it evokes different emotions and narratives with just a shift in brightness and shadow.
